In this beautiful icon of the Christ of the gospels from St. Talka’s we see the symbols of the four gospels in the four corners: the eagle for John, the Man for Matthew, the Ox for Luke and the Lion for Mark. St. Jerome was an early great scripture scholar who in his passion for the scriptures declared that to be ignorant of the scriptures is to be ignorant of Christ. Catholic Theology is base upon two great fountains: Scripture and Tradition. The Catholic theology teacher is one who knows how to take new things and old things out of the storehouse of wisdom. Icons are windows on to the Divine, contemplating them we experience and invitation to go beyond the image to the reality that inspired it. The words of Scripture are verbal icons in the sense that they too invite us to go beyond the surface and search out the meaning the Spirit has laden them with.
